4 Things to see in Alberobello Italy

Alberobello is a small town located in the southern region of Puglia in Italy, known for its unique trulli houses, which are traditional Apulian dry stone huts with conical roofs. Alberobello can be easily reached from Bari. Alberobello is one of the four UNESCO World Heritage Sites that can be found in Puglia. Here are 4 things to see in Alberobello:

Trulli Houses

The main attraction of Alberobello is the trulli houses. You can see thousands of them in Alberobello. Today, they attract visitors from all over the world.

Trulli are indeed conical homes found in the town of Alberobello in the Puglia region of southern Italy. They are unique structures that are built using dry stone techniques, without the use of mortar, and have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Trulli are made of limestone rocks, and their conical roofs are built using a corbelling technique where each layer of stones is slightly offset from the one below, creating a gradual incline that forms a pointed dome at the top. The roofs are often decorated with symbols or designs, and some Trulli have additional stone ornaments or pinnacles on top.

Trulli were originally built by farmers and shepherds as temporary shelter or storage, but over time, they became permanent dwellings. Today, many Trulli in Alberobello have been converted into shops, restaurants, or vacation homes for tourists.

Be sure to stop by Il trullo piu piccolo di Alberobello (the smallest trullo of Alberobello) and il Trullo Siamese (it has two entrances). This is where you will find the famous Instagram Spot “Romantic Trulli”; be respectful of the rope and do NOT enter the property for photos!

Rione Aia Piccola

Rione Aia Piccola is a charming neighborhood with narrow streets and picturesque trulli houses. It is the perfect place to take a stroll and enjoy the local atmosphere. There is a nice viewpoint at the Via Duca degli Abruzzi. When you walk further down through the rectangular arch, you’ll arrive at the Villa Comunale Belvedere Parco.

Belvedere Santa Lucia

At the Largo Martellotta you can take the Scalinata Dell’Amore (stairs of love) up to Chiesa di Santa Lucia. Next to the church is a viewpoint where you can spot all the cone-shaped roofstops of the Rione Monti.

Casa D’Amore

Casa D’Amore is a historic 1797 home, the first in Alberobello to be built with terracotta & mortar in its facade and the first with a non-conical roof.

St Antony’s Church

St. Antony’s Church is a greek cross shaped church built on the toponym of “Rione Monti’s” district, unique of his kind because it’s entirely made by trulli. The construction is recent, it was built in 1927. The contrast between the newest and “improved” northern side of the city and the “poorer” southern side, entirely made of trulli, was once really strong.
